i'm obsessed with
NIKEID. i'll be designing my custom nike air max shoe things soon..
I already have too many shoes with the green/white/grey combination.
i can't see myself wearing predominantly white shoes (i'm a dirty fucker)
black is too dark for me.
blue and yellow? black white red? neon yellow and silver?
I remember growing up when we couldn't really afford to splurge on shoes. my mom once got me bo jackson nike's and I remember my parents arguing, my mom ended up returning the shoes, more than a bit embarrased. the next day my dad took me to the $15 dollar rack at the discount shoe store.
i'm not angry, and I realize the economic reasons. I even see the message about consumerism my dad may have been trying to show me.
but, the only truly resonating effect of that whole experience is my obsession with shoes. I buy em up. I have more pairs than I need. I routinely skip buying clothes or get them at goodwill i order to buy more sneakers.
what am I compensating for? i'm surely not the only one who felt a bit crappier than all the rest in gradeschool, having shoes that were popular years before I wore them. (i think its funny that I and people love vintage style kicks) when most of the boys in my class were wearing eastlands or air jordans ( i still have yet to own jordans, i'm on the prowl)
my shoe obsession started when my mom died. yep. I remember my uncle taking me shopping for clothes for my mom's funeral. I worked at the Buckle at the time, but couldn't really afford to buy the dr martins there. my uncle didn't blink an eye when he purchased a black pair of doc martins dress shoes (discounted of course).
after that I was buying shoes with my saved up cash. I think the fact that my shoe size stopped changing really helped me. college slowed it down a bit, but I remember prowling footlocker, looking for sales.
having a steady job has upped the intensity. I have definately started to think about my own consumerism, and I rarely pay full price anymore. in fact, i rarely buy a shoe thats not heavily discounted. sure, I'll scour eastbay magazine, and go to undefeated or a-team shoes try on a few pairs.. but these days, I keep the shoes on my feet cheap, stylish of course.
but, damn, those limited edition nikes have got me thinkin......
